Siracusa: A Powerful City of the Ancient World
7 Hours
Depart your hotel at 9:00 a.m. for the drive to Siracusa (Syracuse) to meet your guide. Founded in 734 B.C. by colonists from Corinth, it became a major sea power of the Mediterranean. In one of history's great maritime battles, the Athenian fleet was sunk offshore. The Greek mathematician Archimedes was born in Siracusa, and city reached its zenith under the rule of Dionysius. There are two main sites: the offshore island of Ortygia, and the Neapolis archaeological zone, where the stupendous 5th century B.C. Greek theater, with seating for 15,000 people, dominates. Visit the grotto named the Ear of Dionysius because of its unusual acoustics. See also the 2nd century A.D. Roman amphitheatre where gladiators once battled. Then enjoy a walking tour on the beautiful island of Ortygia, with its predominantly medieval structures. Visit the 7th century cathedral that was built on top of a Greek temple, with most of the ancient columns incorporated into the church. Learn the legend of the Fontana Aretusa, a natural freshwater spring next to the sea.

Agrigento: Land of the Gods
8 Hours
Your driver will pick you up at your hotel at 9:00 a.m. to begin your trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Agrigento, to see some of the best preserved Greek temples in the world. Meet your guide for a tour of the Valley of the Temples, with its classical Doric structures that date from the 5th century B.C. Built in a straight line on a ridge parallel to the sea, they are hauntingly beautiful, especially at dawn and twilight, or at night when they are illuminated. Although the temples are in various states of ruin, the most intact, the Temple of Concord, has 34 exterior columns still standing. The oldest, the Temple of Hercules, is thought to have been as large as the Parthenon in Athens. The Temple of Zeus is the largest Doric temple known, while the Temple of Juno has a commanding view over the valley. Colossal statues once stood between the columns of the massive Temple of Jupiter, one of which has been reconstructed and is now on display in the nearby Archaeological Museum, worth a visit if time allows.
