Underground Rome
3 Hours
Discover the hidden treasures of the catacombs of Rome, underground cemeteries where many saints were buried. The vast catacombs of San Callisto (AD 50), hewn from the Vulcanic tufa, are the burial places of several early Popes and contain niches, or loculi, which held two to three bodies. Close by, the walls of the catacombs of San Sebastiano are covered in graffiti invoking St. Peter and St. Paul, whose remains may have been located there at one time. The church of San Clemente, dating back to 1857, houses a 4th century church, and below it, a series of ancient Roman buildings dedicated to St. Clement, the 4th Pope. Another underground level is home to a temple of the cult of Mithras, once an all-male religion imported from Persia that rivaled Christianity for popularity. Lastly, see the Ludus Magnus, an ancient training ground for the Roman Gladiators.
