Bayeux Walking Tour
4 Hours
The capital of lower Normandy until the 11th century, the charming town of Bayeux exhibits a variety of architectural styles: from antiquity through the Renaissance to the modern day. The first town liberated by the allies in 1944, Bayeux escaped serious damage during the War. Stroll its beautifully preserved medieval center and then visit its impressive cathedral. Begun in the 11th century, the Cathedral Notre Dame evolved through the end of the 18th century and features both Roman and Gothic styles. Bayeux is most famous for its 11th century Bayeux Tapestry, an embroidered linen cloth 230 feet long by 18 inches high. An extraordinary historical document as well as a unique work of art, it tells the story of the 1066 invasion of England and the events that led up to it from the Norman perspective. Its 58 panels are vibrant, action packed scenes portrayed in vivid detail, with the minutiae of military and medieval life revealed: 11th century Norman and Saxon dress, boat building, tools and cooking utensils, soldiers enjoying a picnic, war strategies, and even the depiction of Halley's comet.
