Penedès Wine and the Golden Beaches of Sitges
8 Hours
Depart your hotel at 9:30 a.m. for a drive through the beautiful wine region of the Penedès, where 95% of Spain's Cava, or sparkling wine is made. At the Codorníu Cellars, where the same family has been producing wine since the 16th century, the first bottle of cava was produced. Tour the imposing winery buildings, designed specifically for the production and aging of cava. This impressive architectural complex has been declared a Monument of Historical and Artistic Interest. Learn the process of wine production and the history of the cellar, and enjoy a glass of cava. Next visit the beautiful seaside village of Sitges, where Picasso and Dali both spent time. Walk the narrow streets of its historic quarter, a former medieval fortress; visit the Cau Ferrat Museum created by the Catalán artist Santiago Rusiñol from two 16th century cottages that features works of El Greco and Picasso as well as Rusiñol; and then enjoy a seafood lunch by the Seaside Promenade (additional cost). In the afternoon, return to the wine country to visit Bodegas Torres, awarded the 2006 prize for best European Winery of the year by Wine Enthusiast. The Torres family surname has been linked with wine for more than three centuries, and its vineyards produce both outstanding red and white wines, as well as rosé. 5 Hours
The incomparable mountain of Montserrat is unique in the world for its distinctive shape and form: eerie rock formations and steep sided lofty mountain spires conspire to create a magnificent, dramatic landscape. Its historic monastery complex, founded in the 9th century by Benedictine monks, is the pre-eminent religious shrine of Catalonia, which together with the mountain has become the symbol and emblem of Catalan identity. Visit the Basilica to see the medieval statue of La Moreneta, the black madonna, which was found in a nearby cave by shepherds. One of Europe's oldest and renowned boys' choirs, the 50 member Escolania was formed in the 13th century and sings daily in the Basilica. Montserrat also has an interesting museum containing the works of Caravaggio, Tiepolo, Monet, Degas, Dali and Picasso, among others.
