Hotel Villa Pambuffetti
C. Italy: Umbria: Montefalco
Montefalco, situated between Spoleto and Assisi, is known as "the Balcony of Umbria" because of the beautiful view of the Umbrian valley it affords. Built in 1800 as the home of a noble family, Villa Pambuffetti has a fascinating history that includes stays by Herman Hesse and Gabriele D'Annunzio, both of whom wrote about the beauty of Umbria from the villa.
Opened to guests by the charming Pambuffetti family who own and manage it, the villa is surrounded by park-like gardens and has a beautiful swimming pool. The deluxe room that was originally the bedroom of Mrs. Pambuffetti's mother is large, lovely and furnished with antiques. There are no connecting rooms, but families can be accommodated in one of the suites in the annex.
Alessandra, Mrs. Pambuffetti's daughter, and her husband Mauro both speak excellent English, and it is they who are responsible for the villa's excellent cuisine.
Mrs. Pambuffetti shares trade secrets such as the location of the high quality cashmere outlet nearby, where her guests receive an additional discount on the already reduced merchandise.
The medieval town of Montefalco is walking distance from the hotel, and there is a shop selling gorgeous linens at very reasonable prices. This is a lovely, tranquil place to use as home base to explore the Umbrian countryside, while enjoying the care and attention of this very warm family. It is also an excellent summer choice for families because of the swimming pool. Open year round.
